Contemporary Piano Repertoire for Young Performers

One of the best ways to keep the connection to contemporary music vital is to energize young performers with music of our own time. We've compiled a list of music written within the last century specifically composed for young performers. Performance grade levels, when known, have been provided for individual works or collections. And keep in mind, we've included works both in-print and out-of-print.

Search Suggestions

For music in-print, check your local music store or any on-line sheet music site (such as Sheet Music Plus, musicroom, Partitura,  Hickey's Music On Line, Score Store, etc.).

For out-of-print music, check your local library or regional interlibrary loan system. A great way to locate a library that holds a particular piece of music is through WorldCat, the world's largest network of library content and services. If you're not familiar with WorldCat, here's how it works:

Let's say you want to find Robert Lombardo's Twelve Contemporary Pieces for Children. First, go to worldcat.org. Select Booksfor your search, type in the composer's name (Robert Lombardo) and the title of the piece you're looking for (Twelve Contemporary Pieces for Children - sometimes it's easier just to try a few keywords from the title, for example "contemporary" and "children"; avoid number keywords, like "twelve" or "12" - they're often found in too, too many search results). What appears next are all the library listings where that composer and title appear; here's a link to what we found. You then select a result that seems to match what you're looking for, enter your location information (postal code, state, province or country) and, voila, you are shown all the libraries in the WorldCat system that hold the item you are looking for. Your interlibrary loan system can then see if any of those libraries will lend the item to your local library (and you!). Sometimes it takes a bit of searching, but it's often well worth the effort.
