Kazimierz Serocki (1922-1981)

Kazimierz Serocki, composerKazimierz Serocki began studies in composition and piano in Łódź, Poland. He continued his studies in composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. From 1946 to 1951 he performed many times as a concert pianist in Poland and abroad. From 1952 onwards he committed himself exclusively to composing. He was one of the founders of the "Warsaw Autumn" contemporary music festival, and together with Tadeusz Baird and Jan Krenz he formed the composers' group "Group 49". Serocki's output is concentrated in two main spheres: orchestral music and vocal - instrumental pieces to Polish texts. During the 1950's he was one of the leaders of the opening of Polish music to avant-garde techniques, his own works showing a dynamic treatment of percussion sonorities and, in his vocal music, a highly expressive intensity. Notable among his later works are Continuum (1966) for six percussionists on 123 instruments, Dramatic Story (1971) for orchestra and the Fantasia elegiaca (1972) for organ and orchestra.
