Kaija Saariaho (1952-    )

Kaija Saariaho, composerKaija Saariaho is one of the most successful contemporary Finnish composers. After studying with Paavo Haininen at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, she worked for Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg (1981-2) and attended a computer music course at IRCAM in Paris in 1982. She is interested in enlarging the potential of traditional instruments and uses electronic instruments and computers to that end. For Lichtbogen (1985-86), for nine instruments and live electronics, a computer was used in the pre-compositional stage. She also makes use of extra-musical stimuli, such as texts or natural phenomena: Nymphéa (Jardin secret III) (1987), for string quartet and live electronics, employs models from nature for abstract musical composition. She has won a number of international composition prizes, among them the Prix Italia in 1988. Her compositions have been recorded by, among others, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dawn Upshaw and the Kronos Quartet.
