António Chagas Rosa (1960-    )

António Chagas Rosa, composerComposer António Chagas Rosa was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He took the Higher Piano Course at the National Conservatory of Lisbon and holds a degree in History from the New Univesity of Lisbon. He was awarded a scholarship by the Gulbenkian Foundation, and attended a post-graduate course in 20th century chamber music and piano at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, and on a scholarship from the Secretariat of State for Culture he took his Master's in Composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He worked as conductor/répétiteur at the Amsterdam Muziektheater, and taught at the Sweelinck Conservatory. He has written symphonic, chamber and vocal music, and has been commissioned by institutions both in Portugal and abroad. Since 1986, António Chagas Rosa has been an invited assistant teacher of chamber music at the Department of Communication and Art at the University of Aveiro. In the words of the composer, "I like some [of my] works better than others, because there are some in which I see too much effort. They are all important steps, but there are some works from which, apart from this, I receive feedback, which is to hear them as if they weren't composed by me." ..."Sometimes I need to hear things I've done in order to learn from them, because the experience of a première is too rapid and volatile an experience. One is tense, and the concert passes. Therefore, a recording is very important in order to learn what one did well, what one did badly and, above all, to find those moments of harmony between intellect and instinct, the fusion between the poetic world and the formal realization of it."
