Timothy Lee Miller (1961-    )

Timothy Lee Miller, composerRaised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Timothy Lee Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in instrumental music education from the University of Tennessee where he studied composition with John Anthony Lennon. After a period of teaching high school band, he earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Miami where he studied media writing and production, a program focused on composition for the film and television industry. He wrote scores for several films while in Miami, and later after moving to Los Angeles. In 2009 he was selected to write a new score the 1904 Thomas Edison classic silent film "The Maniac Chase" for ERMMedia. Miller's music has been described as programmatic in nature, perhaps due to his background in film music. However, he prefers to think of it as "descriptive," portraying scenes or events in sound. He cites his main influences to be Prokofiev, Mahler, Resphigi, Copland and Stravinsky. He has a great interest in history and things of old and strives to depict events from history. His passion for creating new, fun and energetic concert music has led him to write such pieces as Kid's Play: A Fun Suite for Orchestra (2001)Appalachian Summer: An Ode to Tsiyahi (2011) for orchestra, and Triptych of the American Frontier (2010) for woodwind quintet. His commissions include The Birds and the Bees from the ReVOLution Woodwind Quintet and Concerto for Bassoon and Piano for a student senior recital. His Kid's Play: A Fun Suite for Orchestra was awarded a Distinguished Musician Special Mention at the 2009 IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Ragusa, Italy. Recently he completed settings of the poems of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Walt Whitman in The Day Is Done and Tears. The Composer's Choir of Connecticut recorded these works in March 2011. ERMMedia has recorded two of Miller's orchestral works. Kid's Play: A Fun Suite for Orchestra was recorded by the Millennium Symphony Orchestra and released in September 2008 on the CD Made in the Americas, Volume 1. Alone: Suite from the Original Film Score, was recorded by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra on the Masterworks of the New Era series.
