William Mathias (1934-1992)

William Mathias, composerWelsh composer William Mathias studied with Lennox Berkeley at the Royal Academy of Music and from 1959 taught at University College, Bangor. His music draws on Bartók, Hindemith, Stravinsky and Tippett: the style is essentially tonal and his preference for standard multi-movement forms allows for lyrical and dynamic expression. He wrote much choral music, besides concertos, chamber music, and the opera The Servants (1980). Recognised as being among the finest musicians of his generation, William Mathias became one of the first Welsh composers to achieve international acclaim.
