Nicole Lizée (1973-    )

Nicole Lizée, composerNicole Lizée was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. In 2001 she received a Master of Music degree in composition from McGill University in Montreal where she studied with Denys Bouliane and John Rea. Her Masters thesis consisted of a work for large ensemble and solo turntablist that featured turntable techniques fully notated and integrated into a concert music setting. Along with turntables, she has written for other unorthodox instrument combinations that include the Atari 2600 video game console, omnichords, stylophones, reel-to-reel machines, Simon and Merlin hand held games, and karaoke tapes. Nicole has received commissions from several artists and ensembles including l’Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, Kronos Quartet, BBC Proms, CBC, the Kaufman Center/Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Eve Egoyan, So Percussion, ECM+, Megumi Masaki, SMCQ, Fondation Arte Musica/Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, TorQ Quartet, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Transmission, Arraymusic, Ensemble Kore, Soundstreams, McGill Chamber Orchestra, Standing Wave, Continuum, Brigitte Poulin, Ben Reimer, Motion Ensemble, Bradyworks, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Toca Loca and l’Association des Orchestres de Jeunes du Québec. Her music has been performed in festivals including the BBC Proms (UK), Huddersfield (UK), MATA (NYC), Bang On a Can (US), All Tomorrow’s Parties (UK), X Avant (Canada), Luminato (Canada), Open Ears (Canada), Ecstatic (NYC), C3 (Berlin), Winnipeg New Music Festival (Canada), and Casalmaggiore (Italy). Her works have been performed in such renowned venues as Carnegie Hall (NYC), Royal Albert Hall (London), Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam) and Cité de la Musique (Paris). In 2010 Nicole was awarded a fellowship from the prestigious Civitella Ranieri Foundation based in New York City and Italy. In 2013 she received an Opus Prize nomination for “Composition of the Year” for her violin concerto, Cathedral Mountain. In 2012 her work for piano and notated glitch, Hitchcock Études, was selected by the International Society for Contemporary Music to be featured at the World Music Days in 2014. She has twice been named a finalist for the Jules-Léger Prize, most recently in 2007 for This Will Not Be Televised, scored for chamber ensemble and turntables. This work was selected as a top ten recommended work at the 2008 International Rostrum of Composers in Dublin. In 2002 she was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts Robert Fleming Prize.
