What's New from Andrew List

From The Temple of Dendera: Twelve Etudes for Piano Inspired by the EgyptianZodiac
From The Temple of Dendera: Twelve Etudes for Piano was commissioned by pianist George Lopez, artist-in-residence at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Each etude is a musical portrait of an Egyptian God represented in the Dendera Zodiac. The sculptured Dendera Zodiac is a widely known Egyptian bas-relief from the ceiling of the pronaos (or portico) of a chapel dedicated to Osiris in the Hathor temple at Dendera. This chapel was begun in the late Ptolemaic period; its pronaos was added by the emperor Tiberius. The date for the relief is 50 BC, since it shows the stars and planets in the positions they would have been seen at that date. The relief, which scholar John H. Rogers characterized as "the only complete map that we have of an ancient sky", has been conjectured to represent the basis on which later astronomy systems were based. It is now on display at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

From The Temple of Dendera: Twelve Etudes for Piano Inspired by the Egyptian Zodiac (2011)
    - Amon-Re: The All-Mighty Father, The God of All People
    - Shu: Patron of Cool, Dry Air
    - Phoenix: The Sacred Bird of Heliopolis and the Ba of the Departed
    - Isis: The Earth Mother
    - Wadjet: The Cobra Goddess and Patron of Lower Egypt
    - Thoth: The God of Wisdom and Magic
    - Horus: The God of the Living Pharaoh
    - Sekhmet: The Goddess of Divine Retribution
    - Hathor: The Goddess of Love
    - Osiris: God of the Underworld
    - Anubis: The God of Mummification and the Dead on their Path through the Underworld
    - Sphinx: The Guardian of the Cemetery

The Dendera Etudes are divided into three main sections organized to follow the cycle of birth to death.

The first section begins with Amon-Re: the Almighty Father and the God of all people, a minor god who emerged from obscurity to become the main deity of Egypt who was later rejected by Akhenaten, thus returning to obscurity. This is followed by the creation of air, Shu, and flight/spirit, Phoenix.

The second section is the creation of life represented by Isis, The Earth Mother, and Wadget, the Serpent Goddess, followed by Thoth, the God of Wisdom and Magic who creates human life, represented by Horus, the God of the Living Pharaoh. Destruction and rebirth is represented by Sekhemet the goddess of war, who in her rage punished humanity in such an over zealous way that she almost destroyed the entire world - but before this happened, she was transformed into Hathor the goddess of love.

The final three etudes represent the journey of the afterlife and the underworld. Anubis, the god of mummification takes care of the deceased and leads them to the Hall of Justice where Osiris the god of the underworld judges them by weighing their heart against a feather. The work ends with Sphinx, a reclining male creature who was the guardian of the cemetery and, in the Old Kingdom, a symbol of the Horus of the Horizon. Later in the New Kingdom he became the King of the Gods, and was connected with Amun-Re.
