Charles Knox (1929-     )

Charles Knox, composerDuring most of his years as a composer, Charles Knox has been employed as a performer or teacher. He was an instructor of contemporary, traditional, baroque and renaissance musical styles; a director of student ensembles at small and large colleges and universities; and a performer in symphonic and  jazz ensembles. This is often reflected in the choice and style of his creative work. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music Performance from the University of Georgia and a Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Indiana University where he was a composition student of Bernhard Heiden. In the 1950's he was principal trombonist in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a trombonist in the Third Army Band and in what were among the first racially integrated jazz performances in Atlanta by citizens of Atlanta. His first academic position was at Mississippi College, and he was Professor of Music at Georgia State University from 1965 to 1995. Having spent most of his life in Atlanta, Knox lives there now in academic - but not compositional - retirement and in active membership of Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. In addition to his published works, he has composed hundreds of short pieces for his students and arrangements of existing music for student or church performance. In a broadcast of the National Public Radio program, Performance Today, Knox was called the "dean of Atlanta composers." In 2001 he received the Mayor's Fellowship in the Arts (Award in Music) from the City of Atlanta.

Country Diversion: a day in the life of a Renaissance farmer, chorus (with soloists), consort of 5 instruments, keyboard instrument, or a combination (1979) [compiled and edited by John B. Haberlen; introduction and interludes by Charles C. Knox]

"A compilation of seven Renaissance compositions depicting the events in a typical day with a country farmer . . . formed principally around excerpts from Country cries . . . by Richard Dering (ca. 1580-1636)" [Recommended that the singers, especially the soloists, act out the song texts and wear period farm costumes."]
