Cheng Chin Man (1977-     )

Cheng Chin Man, composerCheng Chin Man is presently an artist in residence of The Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) in Hong Kong. He studied Sound Design and Music Recording at The Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts and graduated in 2000. In the same year he was awarded "Best Student Music Composer" and "Best Student Sound Designer" for theatre production by the academy. He then began to focus on composing and was self-taught. From 2002 to 2004 he was funded by The British Council Chevening Postgraduate Scholarships for his Masters Degree in Composition (Mus.M in Composition) at The University of Manchester. He studied composition with Professor Philip Grange, and electro-acoustic composition with Dr. David Berezan. Cheng Chin Man has developed certain unique musical concepts in his output. His Piano Suite No.88.1-11, composed between 2007 and 2011, consists of 11 piano pieces of different styles. Each piece consists of only the 88 different pitches available on the piano, and each of those 88 pitches appear only once. It is believed that this is the first time in music history that this concept has been applied. Piano Suite No.88.1-11 was premiered in Hong Kong in 2012 by Jeremy Young.
