Richard Addinsell (1904-1977)

Richard Addinsell, composerRichard Addinsell was a British composer most famous for his composition "Warsaw Concerto", which was written originally for the little-seen 1941 film Dangerous Moonlight. Addinsell's education was sporadic. He didn't attend school, being taught at home, and incomplete attempts at studying first Law and then Music (at The Royal College of Music with periods in Berlin and Vienna) were both abandoned without formal qualifications. In 1932 Addinsell composed the music for the Broadway adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (revived in 1947, and produced for TV in 1955, and again in 1983). He spent a couple of years in the USA before returning to England, where he quickly found partners in Clemence Dane and Gertrude Lawrence who sang many of his songs. With Clemence Dane he created incidental music for Adam's Opera. He later was to team up with Joyce Grenfell writing more songs for her revue shows (during which he often accompanied her on the piano). Addinsell made his film music debut in 1936, and scored over 40 films during a thirty-year career, until his retirement in 1965. He composed mainly at the piano, much of his work was orchestrated by Roy Douglas. During WW II, he served as an RAF bomber command navigator. His style is very much what might be called "English Light Music" and his music for films such as Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Tom Brown's Schooldays is firmly traditional with hints of English folk music and Elgar-like pride and pomp. Addinsell was versatile though, being able to adapt to period dramas, thrillers, romances and comedies.

Regarding Addinsell's music for BBC radio plays and features (1940s-50s]:
. . . In all this endeavour, his method of working was the same. He would play what he had composed at the piano, making small notes of the outline of the material, but leaving the detailed work of arranging and orchestrating to other hands. This was nothing new. It had happened throughout musical history in some way or another. Even the 'greats', working against the clock, would pass such work to pupils, or in Bach's case, his 'family' to 'expand', and in the film world to this day, it is the norm. Addinsell's first collaborator was Roy Douglas, who had begun by 'doubling' for Vivien Leigh (on the virginals) in Fire Over England, and worked through to the middle of the war taking in most films (virtually all twenty documentaries) including Dangerous Moonlight, although not Mr Chips. Leonard Isaacs also worked with him on the stage shows Alice, and The Happy Hypocrite and several films including Fire Over England, and Blithe Spirit. The period from 1947 to 1957 is shrouded in some mystery, but it is a fair guess that Leighton Lucas was involved at some time, probably on Hitchcock's Under Capricorn, since he had worked extensively for Louis Levy since the thirties, and Levy conducted the score. From 1957 to 1965, his regular musical associate was Douglas Gamley.
